Banjo

A long, stringed instrument with a circular body with parchment strained over a metal hoop. Played with the fingers or a plectrum. Believed to have originated in Africa it achieved popularity among the Southern US slave colonies, becoming the accepted instrument of Negro minstrels in the 19th century and found a place in Jazz bands in the 20th century.
